The book stresses the importance of having students write everyday, possess a writer's notebook as a student and as a teacher, and the beneficial need to have communication with peers and the teacher. These three components and others are fully laid out in detail when writers' workshop is explained in this valuable resource.

I was assigned to read it for a literacy class while pursuing my Reading endorsement, but I would suggest it for any teacher who wants to strengthen students' abilities to become effective writers. Great Product! A great resource for workshop teachers. There is so many curriculums out there but no one really explains why you should put into practice certain elements. This book provides an understanding of what are good teaching practices in writing and why.

It is practical and I am using it to enrich my professional knowledge on teaching writing to second graders. I highly recommend it! Format: Paperback. Teaching writing has always been one of my weak points so I am so excited to try out many of the concepts discussed. For example, I was never trained to actively involve kids in the demonstration of the writing process. This book taught me how to conduct an interactive writing lesson where teacher and students compose together.

In doing this the teacher is able to play to the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. Also helpful was the section devoted to assessing written pieces. One Ah-Ha for me was that we should assess more of what the students CAN do and work from there rather than penalize them for what they can't do.

  5. Also of interest to me was the idea that we should be working to aid the authors kids to produce their best piece of writing possible rather than to "fix" every error they make. The best part for me was the beginning half of the text where much discussion is given to the importance of bringing in quality literature as a guide for student writing.

    The many anecdotes, visual examples, and "how-to" guides for different types of lessons within the writers workshop were of value to this visual learner. The one part of the text I did not care for was the chapter toward the end which seemed like an advertisement for a certain type of commercial book program to me.

    A chapter about how to organize a writers workshop, including all of the components discussed, over the course of a week would also have been extremely helpful. Overall if you are an experienced teacher looking for a change or a new teacher wondering where to start this book would be a great resource for you. I think Guiding K-3 Writers to Independence is a great resource book for beginning teachers. It gives you lots of ideas for how to structure your writer's workshop in your classroom.
